Year 5 and 6 Volcanoes Topic

As part of the Year 5 and 6 creative 'Mountains' topic, the children have been using a variety of skills to study Volcanoes. In this cross-curricular topic, the children are encouraged to make connections between different areas of learning.

For example, both classes made working volcano models, using the knowledge they had learnt in science to create an 'eruption' by mixing vinegar, Bicarbonate of Soda and water and watching the effect. Not only was this great fun, it also showed the children how lava moves down the sides of a volcano and also the chemical reactions which occur when different materials are mixed.

Miss Griffiths' class have also been learning about Jounalistic writing in literacy and, having researched famous volcanoes, wrote newspaper articles about one of the most famous volcanic eruptions of all time.

AND... Next time you're outside the school office, take a look at the Powerpoint presentations which the children presented to the rest of the class about different aspects of volcanoes.
