Homework Policy

Rationale

Homework is important at all stages in a child's education. When undertaken properly, it extends the challenge open to the pupil and ensures that teaching is used to maximum effect.

Purpose

·    To extend learning already started in lessons e.g. through additional reading.

·    To make best use of learning resources of all kinds available through the home.

·    To encourage pupils to develop the confidence, self-discipline and habits needed to study on their own.

·    To ensure that skills, particularly in literacy and numeracy, developed in classroom learning receive additional re-enforcement and consolidation.

·    To encourage an effective educational partnership between school and parents/carers.

·    To prepare pupils for secondary school and the demands of higher education.

When will my child be given their homework?

·    Homework will be set on a Friday and handed in on a Thursday (except in Year 6, where homework may be handed out more frequently).

·    It is the child/ parents responsibility to hand homework in on time and this will be monitored by the class teacher.

·    A child may be asked to complete the homework in school time (playtime or golden time) if it is not completed at home.

·    Teachers will acknowledge all homework handed in on time and ensure homework is set according to this policy.

How can I help my child?

Parents and carers can help by:

1.            Making it plain that they value homework and ensuring homework is completed.

2.            Explaining to their children how homework will improve their learning.

3.            Providing a reasonably peaceful, suitable place where their children can do their homework.

4.            Using encouragement and praise when their children have completed their homework tasks.

5.            By actively involving themselves in the homework activities, especially with younger children.

6.            Reading with their child for 3 x 20 minute sessions (or equivalent) every week.

This policy should be read in conjunction with the School's Prospectus and Home School Agreement.
